Welcome Jessica Nute as co-administrator for Facebook Jaycee Park. The Facebook site’s name was changed because the “Friends” designation associated with “Jaycee Park” caused some confusion about donations. Houston Parks Board is the 501(c)(3) that manages the private fund for Jaycee Park.
Thanks to the Houston Parks Board, the “spalls” or gouges on the center tennis court’s playing surface have been repaired via a private vendor. The private fund is for amenity repair/ replacement. Many of you have contributed to this fund. In the event that the City does not have funds for equipment replacement or repair, the Houston Parks Board can assist. If you would like to ensure our private fund stays healthy so our park remains safe and in good shape, you can go to the Houston Parks Board website to make a donation. Just click the orange Donate button on the top of any page and on the donation form, either select Jaycee Park from the dropdown list, and/or type “Jaycee Park” in text box. Thank you!
Capital Improvement Project Update
Per the latest response from Lisa Johnson, the City’s Parks Program Manager: We will move forward with the lighting package and ask the design team to look at improving the existing structure. She is referring to the small shade structure by the tennis courts. Although a lighting package for the park will most likely expend the CIP allocation, there is a possibility that the existing small structure may be upgraded. As of the deadline for this publication, a concept exhibit with a detailed, prioritized price list from the City as to what constitutes a “lighting package” has yet to be provided to the Super Neighborhood 14 Council. At least 25 cats have been killed and mutilated in the area since 2008, according to Lazybrook resident Jennifer Estopinal, who launched a Facebook page to spread awareness.
In addition to a $9,690 Crime Stoppers reward and a $10,000 reward announced by a resident whose cat was recently killed, Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital has just announced a $2,500 reward leading to an arrest and conviction.
The animal hospital became aware of the killings soon after they started. Representative Tyler Moore told us that a dead cat brought to them in 2008 had been partially skinned, and its ribs had been “cut with some kind of tool.” A vet also noted the body had “a relatively bloodless appearance to the fur and abdomen, given the extent of muscle injury.”
The Elliots said they authorized Houston police and BARC officials to send the remains to Texas A&M for a thorough examination. In the meantime, they are hoping that someone out there knows something.

The killing and mutilation of cats in the Heights area has sadly been a recurring problem for residents and pet owners in that neighborhood.
Jennifer Estopinal, administrator of the Justice For Murdered Cats in Heights Facebook page, says that she has documented 23 cases of cat mutilations in that neighborhood. There may be dozens more that have occurred but she says some pet owners may be afraid to come forward and tell their neighbors and local law enforcement.
Some more than likely don’t want to relive the moment they found their pet brutally killed in their front yard or driveway.
Just this past weekend a husband and wife in the Timbergrove area close to Jaycee Park woke up early Saturday morning to find their own cat lying dead and in pieces on their lawn. They had last seen the pet hours before. They believe that sometime between 3 a.m. and sunrise their pet was taken off and mutilated.
So far that family has declined to talk to the media about the incident.
Houston Police Department spokesman Victor Senties said Monday that the department’s animal cruelty division is aware of the incident and that officials are waiting to speak with the complainant before they will make a statement to the media.

It’s hard to believe that my fitness studio, To Fit You, has been open for three months. It has been amazing and great fun to meet new people, challenge my self to grow my business and, last but not least, walk to work. My old clients love the studio and new clients really like the location and what we have to offer them to get healthy and fit. I have a yoga classes Tuesday evenings and Wednesday at noon. This summer has been one of the mildest summers I can remember. Houston really has two seasons cool and hot. That can be a little confusing for new people just moving to the city. Because fall is really our spring so that is when we start that fitness program we have been putting of or just get out doors. With that I have a lot of weekend warrior mentality or people starting their fitness program with too much intensity and they end up getting hurt or discouraged because they started out too fast and got burned out. This is we’re I come in. I have several clients that I work with who have had some injuries doing cross fit, yoga etc. I specialize in analyzing movement and seeing what my clients need to improve on to get them back to doing what they love.
The challenge I see with most exercise programs is they start out too vigorous and most people do not know how to go at their own pace. What exactly does that mean? I help my clients build a tool box so they can modify their activity based on their fitness level. With the weather getting cooler people want to be Outdoors so to fit you does group training of 3-5 people. Just enough for clients to still get individual attention and have some socialization with their group members. So for those of you wanting to spend this fall feeling better and getting ready for those holiday party’s in better shape and looking great To Fit You can get you there with some choices that will work for you.
People come in all shapes and sizes and I don’t believe in a cookie cutter approach. So here are a few exercise and stretches you can do on a daily basis to get you in the grove of fitness and well being. Remember to breath and make a set time in your day to exercise. The number one reason people don’t exercise is that they don’t have time. So I am encouraging every one of you “to have time you got to make time”.
